Barker addresses Matsheke and Sekgota’s Stellenbosch FC exit
Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has addressed the exit of Darrel Matsheke and Kgaogelo Sekgota, who were said to have shown the door for the reported discipline issues.
Barker was speaking after Stellies’ match against Milford FC at the Princess Magogo Stadium, where the Stellies hammered Milford FC 6-1 to secure the spot in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.
The Stellenbosch gaffer was asked to give enlightenment on what led to the departures of the two former Kaizer Chiefs players Matsheke and Sekgota who were said] to have “transgressed the club’s internal code of conduct.”
According to Barker, the club tried to give the players the much-needed support while the duo was struggling with discipline.
Barker says the club decided to “make a stand” when the players’ disobedience persisted.

“It’s important that we’re a club that one of our mottos and slogans is modern football. So, we’re there to support and help players to be professional about what they do,” said Barker.
“And in both instances, we were there to support and help the players and give them the level of counseling and support throughout.
“But you know, unfortunately, sometimes you just reach the stage where you can not continue [tolerating] the behavior. Then the club had to make a stand.”
Sekgota was the first to part ways with the Western Cape-based club in February. His departure came after his seven-month stay at the club.
The 26-year-old joined Stellenbosch at the beginning of the season after leaving Kaizer Chiefs. He made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal in the process.
Meanwhile, Matsheke joined Stellies in October last year following his permanent exit from Amakhosi. He had spent the previous season on loan at Moroka Swallows.
He leaves the club having collected 12 appearances and scored one goal.
