Memela on Pirates: ‘I have love for the team, but…’
Luvuyo Memela has looked back on what led to his tough decision to leave Orlando Pirates having been at the club for five years.
‘Amigo’ is currently in the books of the Eastern Cape-based side, Chippa United. He joined the club in July after his departure from Richards Bay.
He has played for three clubs since leaving Orlando Pirates in 2020. Memela had a two-season stint with AmaZulu FC before a one-season stay at Richards Bay FC.
His Buccaneers exit came as a shock with the left-footer having had some fine campaigns while at the club.
The left-winger was hoping for an improved contract, however, what the Soweto giants put on the table couldn’t match his demands. Memela says he loved the club but couldn’t continue while discontented.

“It was like a mutual agreement as we were discussing the new contract,” said Memela in the interview with FARPost.
“So, we were discussing, you know after COVID-19, things were a bit slow. “We discussed and yes I was not happy with the offer. So, the team made it clear that if you’re not taking the offer, we understand and there’s nothing wrong.
“If you’re not happy then what’s the point of taking something that you know in the next few weeks or month end when your salary goes in and you’re like, ‘I’m still not happy’.
“It’s not what I wanted, even [though] I had love of the team but sometimes when things don’t go accordingly, eventually then you will not be yourself.
“You’ll be angry, fighting and which is not you. If you’re not happy, they understand. “So, then I thought it’s not gonna change then, I [had] to respect it.”
The 36-year-old amassed over 90 appearances in all competitions during his time at the Sea Robbers. He scored 15 goals and provided 28 assists.
