Eswatini goalie knocking hard on DStv Prem doors

Even at the age of 30, Eswatini goalie Khanyakwezwe Shabalala has stopped at nothing in a bid to find his DStv Premiership breakthrough.

Having been linked with two PSL clubs, Eswatini national team goalkeeper Shabalala is sending a strong message to his suitors.

Shabalala, the Mbabane Highlanders captain, has been on Cape Town Spurs‘ radar. Last season, Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit University of Pretoria made inquiries about his availability.

But the deal failed to sail through between AmaTuks and Mbabane Highlanders, who held onto his services.

However, Shabalala has been in blistering form albeit Highlanders’ indifferent performances. On top of that, he has wrestled the Sihlangu first-choice jersey and has earned eight caps with the national team.

Shabalala is confident of getting his DStv Premiership breakthrough in the next transfer window.

“It has always been my dream to play in the South African league because it’s the best,” Shabalala told FARPost.

“Last season, AmaTuks wanted to sign me, but the deal failed along the way. I believe they are still interested.

“This season, Cape Town Spurs made some steps, but I couldn’t complete the move, maybe because of the coaching changes.

“However at the moment, I believe I have done enough to earn a place in the league. I’m confident one of the clubs interested will ensure the move is completed in the next transfer window.”

It remains to be seen if his dream will come true as his contract with the Eswatini giants is ending. In his recent achievements, Shabalala won the 2023 Bible Cup Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.

Moreso, he guarded Eswatini’s goals in October last year when they kept their first clean sheet against Bafana in a decade. They drew 0-0 in an international friendly that was played on 13 October 2023 at the FNB stadium.
