Teko Modise offers advice to Bafana Bafana newcomer Patrick Maswanganyi

PSL legend Teko Modise has offered Bafana Bafana newcomer Patrick Maswanganyi some valuable advice on having a long and sustainable football career.

Since his transfer from SuperSport United to Orlando Pirates at the start of the 2023/24 season, Maswanganyi has made a significant impact, generating a lot of buzz among fans and pundits.

The Pirates midfielder has consistently performed well when playing. To date, ‘Tito’ has made 29 appearances in all competitions, scored five goals and provided seven assists.

Despite being impressive for the Sea Robbers, he was always overlooked by Bafana coach Hugo Broos, up until now, ahead of the March FIFA international break.

The 25-year-old finally received his first senior call-up for friendlies matches against Andorra and Algeria. He made his debut in the match against Andorra, which ended as a 1-1 draw on Thursday night.

Modise says Maswanganyi should be consistent like Themba Zwane to avoid being a one-season wonder. A while ago, Broos stated that Maswanganyi could be a future replacement for Zwane in the national team.

“I just hope he can grow and become a better player. In the last five seasons we’ve been seeing players performing good just for one season, then next season they’re not there,” Modise told FARPost.

“We finally need someone that is consistent as Themba Zwane for a couple of seasons. Without putting pressure on Tito, he has all the tools and characteristics to become one of the best players.

“He has to continue doing what he loves, which is football. If nothing disturbs the football, I think he should be fine.

“Distractions are going to be there; you can’t run away from them; he’s a human being. But he has to stay focused, understand what he wants to achieve his goals and look at the path he wants to take.

“He shouldn’t be scared to ask because he’s going to make mistakes. And he needs to be appreciative of the fact that he needs to learn from those mistakes.”
