‘That’s the problem with South African football’: – Hugo Broos

Following Bafana Bafana’s recent disappointing draw against Andorra, head coach Hugo Broos has pinpointed a specific area he believes hinders South African football.

Broos’ charges played to a dull 1-1 draw against lower-ranked Andorra in the FIFA series international friendlies in Algeria on Thursday evening.

Bafana Bafana conceded a howler of a goal in the first five minutes of the match after goalkeeper Ricardo Goss couldn’t clear his defensive line.

However, South Africa pulled one back through debutant Elias Mokwana in the 25th minute after a good combination with Thabang Monare.

The AFCON 2023 bronze medalists created enough goal-scoring opportunities but struggled to apply the finishing touch in the final third.

Although Broos said he was happy with the results, he stressed that South Africa doesn’t have a proven goal scorer.

Bafana Bafana currently have Cape Town City forward Khanyisa Mayo and Stellenbosch FC talisman Igraam Rayners as the striking force.

Mayo has scored nine goals in 18 appearances in the DStv Premiership while Rayners has netted seven goals in 17 matches in the league for Stellies.

“I think we learned a lot. This was a difficult game, so it was a good experience for the young guys who played for the first time,” said Broos.

“So I think now they know the difference between the PSL and this kind of game even when you play teams ranked 150 or something on FIFA rankings.

“The goal for us was always to give those [uncapped] players a chance to have that experience and I’m satisfied.

“I think we’ve shown again what is the problem with South African football, we don’t have a scorer, the guy who gets one chance and scores the goal. If you check, we had six or seven chances, and we only scored once.

“So in this game, you will always win if you are more aggressive and if you have more quality in front of the goal. But again, this is the only thing I’m not satisfied with, but the rest I’m satisfied a lot.”
