‘One thing people appreciated about me’: Michael Morton
While admitting that he isn’t one of the “most talented” footballers, Cape Town Spurs veteran midfielder Michael Morton has revealed what he feels people appreciate about him.
Morton began his professional football career in 2008 at Orlando Pirates after he was promoted from the club’s academy.
He arrived at the club at the age of 12 after he was scouted when he was playing for Randburg FC.
After his promotion, the 35-year-old played four games for the side before he departed. He says leaving was the best decision as it’d be hard to break into Ruud Krol’s team which was a dominant force at the time in SA football.
During his spell at the Sea Robbers, he was loaned to Bidvest Wits. After his Pirates’ exit, he went on to play for Maritzburg United, SuperSport United, AmaZulu FC, Cape Umoya, Cape Town All-Stars and Cape Town Spurs.
Morton admitted he isn’t “the most gifted”, however, his work ethic and leadership skills have helped him stay afloat.
MICHAEL MORTON SAYS WORK ETHIC AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS HELPED HIM COMPETE
“I’m the first to admit that I was not the most gifted footballer, I had my strengths and things that I did very well,” Morton told FARPost.
“But the one thing that people appreciated the most [about me] was the work ethic and the leadership ability. You can’t lead a group of men if you don’t show the example, be the example and do the right things.
“So, with the abilities that I had, I had to make sure that I ticked everything on the box. Some guys have a lot more talent and can get can away with a lot more.
“When you have a skill set that I have, then you have to add a lot of work ethic to that as well so that you can compete at the top level.”
