‘Kaizer Chiefs were too late’: Luvuyo Memela
Former Orlando Pirates and now-Chippa United winger Luvuyo Memela has made a huge revelation and admission about Kaizer Chiefs.
Memela, who has an educated left foot, had a long haul in the lower ranks prior to breaking into the top-flight via the mighty Orlando Pirates in 2015.
After leaving Ajax Cape Town Juniors in 2010, he signed for Hanover Park FC. He also played for Chippa United before they were promoted to the top-flight.
At times, he endured struggles to find the club before he went on to shine at All-Stars who then sold him to the Sea Robbers at the start of the 2015/16 season.
He has admitted that he grew up admiring Kaizer Chiefs and wishing to don the famous Gold and Black shirt.
However, Pirates snatched him first but it appears Chiefs did reach out to Memela’s representatives. However, it was too late as he was already in the books of their arch-rivals.
LUVUYO MEMELA SAYS HE WAS HOPING TO SIGN FOR KAIZER CHIEFS
“I grew up loving Chiefs, I was like wishing and hoping that they will contact me or my manager,” Memela told FARPost.
“So, I thought they would contact us but came Pirates first. I was very shocked and scared. I remember asking [my manager] if he was serious but he was even shocked himself.
“Zulu [the manager] said to me when Pirates wanted me, they did everything quickly because they didn’t want anybody [to overtake them].
“Even the chairman was in Cape Town, he asked the chairman of All Stars to meet. We went there and around 1, I agreed [to sign].
“After a day or two after signing, they were like, ‘don’t tell anybody, just tell your family’.
‘MY MANAGER GOT A CALL FROM CHIEFS’
“I think that’s when my manager said he got a call from Chiefs saying they’re also interested in me. But I don’t know who phoned, but it was somebody from Chiefs asking about me.
“But he told them it’s too late, the boy has signed for another team. So, that was it.”
