‘He’s guiding me’: Shandre Campbell reveals his idol

SuperSport United starlet Shandre Campbell has named the DStv Premiership star who has had a profound impact on his footballing journey.

Campbell has been one of the youngsters that have impressed so far this season in the DStv Premiership coming from the club’s academy.

The versatile attacker has been consistent in his performances playing as a right winger, left winger and even as an attacking midfielder. Through his displays, the 18-year-old has become a key player for Gavin Hunt, cementing his place in the starting line-up.

In 22 matches in all competitions, Campbell has contributed to nine goals. The SA Under-20 attacker has found the back of the net five times and provided four assists.

Campbell says Lakay is his role model and the interesting part is that the two players are at SuperSport. Therefore, the youngster gets to learn a lot from his idol from a close range each day.

The 2021/22 Defender of the Season has played for clubs like now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, Cape Town City FC and Mamelodi Sundowns. The 32-year-old has made 368 PSL appearances in all competitions, scored 26 goals and provided 53 assists.

Lakay helped Sundowns to win seven titles. These are namely; four league titles, one MTN8 title, one Nedbank Cup and one Telkom Knockout Cup [now called Carling Knockout Cup].

The Western Cape-born star has also represented Bafana Bafana and earned seven caps.

“Since the start of my soccer career, since I’m playing on the left Lyle Lakay [is my role model] and is in my team,” said Campbell.

“He’s a big player, and he has won many cups. He has done this through his skills and all of that and his technique.

“I’ve been under his umbrella, he’s guiding me so I don’t do the wrong things, and that I stay level-headed.”
