A look at Pitso Mosimane’s take on Themba Zwane

Pitso Mosimane has revealed a fascinating glimpse into Bafana Bafana playmaker Themba Zwane’s personality and playing style.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro once again displayed his class on Tuesday in a 3-3 draw against Algeria. An unstoppable Zwane struck twice as Bafana Bafana held the Desert Foxes on home soil in an international friendly match.

‘Mshishi’ received plaudits from soccer lovers, and his former coach, Mosimane, has weighed in. The 34-year-old has turned into a talisman of sorts for both club and national team.

Here are four traits Pitso Mosimane seems to like about Themba Zwane.

THE QUIET LEADER

Mosimane describes the Sundowns captain as a leader who prefers actions over words. While not a vocal presence, he commands respect through his dedication and unselfishness. He keeps the dressing room focused and prioritises the team’s success above individual glory. “No arguments with the Coaches, but has an opinion. He keeps the dressing room quiet and focused, unselfish behaviour and cares about the team,” wrote Mosimane on X.

A TALENT THAT NEEDS FREEDOM TO FLY

Mosimane emphasises the importance of appreciating Zwane’s unique talent. He believes ‘Shika’ thrives under a coach who trusts him and grants him the freedom to express his skills on the pitch. Coach Rulani Mokwena’s philosophy seems to perfectly suit Zwane, allowing him to “dance and ski on the pitch” – a metaphor for his creative flair and dribbling prowess.

THE INTROVERTED ENTERTAINER

Despite his quiet demeanour, Zwane brings joy to the team. Mosimane describes him as someone who, despite his introversion, always keeps the mood light with his laughter. This balance between focus and fun seems to be a key ingredient in Zwane’s success. “Always laughing but an introvert,” notes Mosimane.

A STRONG DESIRE TO EXCEL

One interesting aspect Mosimane highlights is the Tembisa-born star’s competitive nature. He doesn’t appreciate attempts to overshadow his talent. While this might be perceived negatively, it could also be interpreted as his strong desire to excel and be the driving force on the pitch. “Does not like anybody who dims his light.”

Mosimane’s comments reveal a deep understanding of Zwane’s strengths. By respecting, trusting, and allowing him to express his talent, Mosimane got the best out of Zwane’s talent, making him a vital cog in the Sundowns machine.

Four years after he left Sundowns, Zwane continues to carry Sundowns and Bafana on his shoulders. In 395 outings, he has scored 79 goals for the Brazilians.
