Percy Tau’s ex-club joins Sundowns in Khanyisa Mayo chase
Percy Tau’s former club has joined Mamelodi Sundowns in the pursuit of Cape Town City FC striker Khanyisa Mayo’s signature.
Mayo has been a subject of speculation after an impressive showing in front of goals in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
The 25-year-old forward has scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 21 matches across all competitions for CT City. He is in contention to finish the current campaign as the top goal scorer in the league.
The highly rated attacker is second on the goal-scoring charts with nine goals in the Premiership, one goal behind Sundowns’ talisman Lucas Ribeiro, who’s on top with 10 goals.
In the previous campaign, Mayo ended the season as the joint top goal scorer with Masandawana striker Peter Shalulile, with 12 goals.
WHICH CLUB SHOWED INTEREST IN KHANYISA MAYO?
Mayo was recently rewarded for his good performances with a national team call-up by Hugo Broos. He was part of the Bafana squad that played international friendlies against Andorra and Algeria a few days ago.
With the former Richards Bay FC star proving to be one of the lethal strikers, he has made it into the wish list of Percy Tau’s former side Club Brugge. Tau played for the Belgian giants during the 2019/20 season. He scored three goals while making five assists in 26 games.
“Khanyisa Mayo’s name has been discussed in Belgium at Club Brugge,” a reliable source told FARPost.
”The club has already made contact with Mayo’s representatives over a possible move for the next season. But the stumbling block at the moment is the asking prize from Cape Town City.
“I think they are asking for something around R40 000 000, which Club Brugge feels is a bit too much. Strange things happen in football; don’t rule this one out. But also Brugge is competing with one of the high spenders in South Africa which is Mamelodi Sundowns.”
Meanwhile, CT City chairman John Comitis recently told this publication that Sundowns are the only club that has enquired about the services of Mayo.
