Tovey shares insight on Gamondi ahead of Yanga-Sundowns clash

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Neil Tovey has shared some insight on his former colleague Miguel Gamondi, as well as his predictions ahead of the clash against Young Africans.

Gamondi and Tovey were co-coaches when Sundowns won the league title in 2005/06. The Argentine will face off against his former club in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-final match at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday.

The former Bafana Bafana captain, Tovey, shared his admiration for Gamondi but doubts his side can cause an upset against Sundowns. He described Gamondi as a calm coach but does his homework well.

“He is a very likeable guy, he doesn’t get flustered,” Tovey told FARPost.

“He keeps calm and analyses the game a lot, and he doesn’t share too many emotions. He is not one to get extensively vocal on the bench.”

CAN MIGUEL GAMOND CAUSE AN UPSET AGAINST HIS FORMER SIDE?

“As much as I admire Miguel, I can’t see them upsetting Sundowns,” added Tovey.

“Sundowns are really a good team at this moment in time. You can see how Bafana Bafana are playing [due to Sundowns players]. So Sundowns are really doing nicely. They have huge experience now on the continent,” he said. 

NEIL TOVEY BELIEVES THIS COULD BE SUNDOWNS SEASON FOR A SECOND TITLE 

Tovey has also tipped the 2016 Champions to go past the last-eight stage and believes they have what it takes to win their second CAF title.

“I think they didn’t do themselves justice in the last one [CAF Champions League],” added Tovey.

“They were in such a good position to go through and do the job they needed, and they sort of relaxed. I think they are more than well-equipped and have everything going well for them.”
