The showboating debate: What Chiefs starlet Mfundo Vilakazi thinks
Kaizer Chiefs starlet Mfundo Vilakazi has shared his thoughts on showboating since his promotion to the senior team.
Vilakazi is known for his exciting dribbling skills and flair for showmanship on the field. This electrifying style of play often ignites the crowd, generating a buzz in the stands.
The 18-year-old was promoted to the Chiefs’ first team in January 2024 after a string of impressive performances Chiefs’ DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] team.
The teen sensation has now played two matches in all competitions for Amakhosi’s senior team, coming in as a substitute in both matches.
Mfundo Vilakazi’s Take on Showboating at pro level
‘Obrigado’ says he will not showboating like he did in the DDC. Vilakazi wants to show maturity when playing for the senior team, even though he strongly believes showboating has a place in SA football.
“I have to change. It’s a must that I show maturity on the field.” Vilakazi told FARPost. “The first team needs results. So showboating, wasting time standing on the ball, dribbling a lot, and pleasing fans in the stands does not help anyone when the team is not winning.
“I told myself that from now on, I should start playing differently and be mature during matches. I’m sure many people will see a change in me now.
“That’s why I now play progressive football, dribbling while going forward. I will try to score or provide an assist. I thought, maybe what if I don’t get promoted because of my football [showboating]?”
Vilakazi further revealed that he will do showboating when the team is leading by a huge lead as he believes in entertaining the fans.
“But if the scoreline is 3-0 or 4-0, then I will do what I’m known for on the field of play,” he added.
