Calvin Johnson: ‘I have to give him 10-out-of-10’

Despite a disappointing result against Cape Town City FC on Saturday in the DStv Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Calvin Johnson has singled out one player who had a great match.

The two out-of-form teams in the league, desperately needing the three points, played out to a 0-0 draw at a sold-out Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In five matches, Chiefs have won one game following three draws and a defeat. The Citizens, on the other side, have registered two draws and suffered three defeats.

After the result, the Capetonians are sixth with 32 points, while Amakhosi are seventh with 30.

Johnson was impressed by Siyethemba Sithebe’s performance in the middle of the park. The Chiefs coach wondered why the midfielder has only made one appearance this season.

Sithebe had only played in a league encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns in August 2023, when Molefi Ntseki was in charge.

In the past months, the 31-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club because of his lack of game time.

Against CT City, Sithebe started in midfield alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa in the absence of key midfielders Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo. The two stars were suspended for one match after accumulating four yellow cards, respectively.

“I don’t know why he has played one game. I think since Sunday, he’s been working to play,” said Johnson.

“Today he got his chance; I have to give him 10-out-of-10; he did well today.

“I hope he stays like this for the next 10 games. I always said this, ‘I will try to give everybody an opportunity while I’m here’. And if they play and do well, it shows you why the club bought them initially.”
