Neil Tovey talks Bafana progress under Hugo Broos

Former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey has shared his thoughts on the impact of Hugo Broos on the national team.

Broos took Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast earlier this year.

The Belgian mentor has helped revive interest in the national team due to their good performances. This also includes the recent entertaining 3-3 draw against former African champions Algeria in a FIFA international friendly match.

FORMER BAFANA CAPTAIN NEIL TOVEY IMPRESSED WITH THE TEAM’S PROGRESS

“From a team perspective, they look like a team that plays with so much confidence than they were a year ago,” he told FARPost.

“Obviously, this is for various reasons. But they are much more united if I can call it. They are doing the right things at the right time now. That has shown in their results.”

However, Tovey declined to make a comment on the reports that the coach could be lost to South African football.

“Demand [for Hugo Broos] is demand. I just don’t know if it’s true,” he said.

HUGO BROOS STAYING PUT AS SOUTH AFRICA NATIONAL TEAM COACH

There were reports before the match against Algeria that Broos was on the verge of joining the Tunisia national team.

But the 71-year-old denied the rumours immediately after the match. He assured his players after the Algeria clash that he was going nowhere.

Under Broos, Bafana Bafana have risen in FIFA rankings due to their showing at the Africa Cup of Nations. Prior to the AFCON Bafana were ranked 66th in the World and have now jumped to 58.

The national team will now shift their focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers taking place in June. They will begin their qualifying campaign away to Nigeria on 3 June. They then host neighbours Zimbabwe on 10 June at a venue yet to be confirmed.
