How Steve Komphela changed the ambience at Arrows

A Golden Arrows star has opened up on how veteran coach Steve Komphela changed the ambience in their dressing room.

Golden Arrows have struck the right chords since the return of veteran coach Steve Komphela last month. They have picked up seven points out of a possible nine in the last three games. Arrows recorded consecutive wins over Polokwane City FC and Richards Bay FC, respectively.

On Wednesday, they showed character when they clawed back from behind to force a share of the spoils with SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership.

Before this commendable vein of form, Arrows had last won on October 23 against Kaizer Chiefs. And that was followed by a shocking downward spiral after losing 11 straight matches.

It is this poor record that triggered the raft of changes in the coaching department, ushering in Komphela.

Komphela’s arrival breathed a new lease of life, and striker Know Mutizwa reveals how the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has done it.

“First of all, he is a father figure. He has been here before; he knows the system. That is why it was easy for him to settle,” Mutizwa told FARPost.

“Since he came, there has been no player movement. He came and was quick to notice that we were low on confidence. The talent is there, but we had lost confidence. The good results had not been coming in our favour; considering how we started, it was painful. So he took us in, one by one and had such an inspiring talk to boost our confidence.

“Even in training, he has been doing it. That has honestly changed me and I believe it did the same to my teammates.

“I’ve had a different feeling that maybe the season can end without scoring, but now, I believe there is a chance for me.”

The KZN-based club has now picked 30 points in 22 matches, the same number of points as the Chiefs.

Chiefs are eighth on the DStv Premiership table, while Arrows are ninth based on goal difference. Abafana Bes’thende face Orlando Pirates in their next league match slated for Saturday [today] at Orlando Stadium [17:30].
