Ex-Chiefs defender weighs in: Should Cavin Johnson stay or go?

A former Kaizer Chiefs player has weighed in on whether Amakhosi should keep caretaker coach Cavin Johnson or look for another coach when the season comes to an end.

Johnson took over the coaching reins at Chiefs on an interim basis in October 2023 after Molefi Ntseki was shown the exit door following a string of poor results.

With Johnson at the wheel, results did not improve much, and Chiefs are set to end the 2023/24 campaign without a trophy.

Chiefs are now heading to their ninth season without a trophy, having been eliminated in the Nedbank Cup. They were also knocked out of the MTN8 and Carling Cup. The last time Amakhosi won a trophy was back in 2015 when they won the league under the guidance of coach Stuart Baxter.

The 65-year-old Johnson has been in charge of 15 games across all competitions, winning five games, drawing four and losing six in the process.

The Soweto giants are currently placed eighth on the DStv Premiership log standings with 30 points from 23 outings.

The ex-Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi has joined the debate about whether the Glamour Boys should keep Johnson at the helm or bring another coach at Naturena.

MOKETE TSOTETSI ON COACH CAVIN JOHNSON

Tsotetsi insists that if the management feels comfortable with Johnson in charge, they can keep him to give him time to establish his own team.

“To be honest, if management is comfortable with coach Cavin Johnson, I think they can keep him to maintain continuity because he started in the middle of the season,” Tsotetsi told FARPost.

“Keeping him may give him time to establish his own team and maybe results may come.

“So, if the management is feeling comfortable with him and coach Johnson is willing to stay, and make it work moving forward.”

WHAT CAVIN JOHNSON SAID ABOUT HIS FUTURE AT KAIZER CHIEFS

Following their goalless draw with Cape Town City last month, coach Johnson commented on his future at Chiefs when asked if he had been offered the permanent head coach role.

“…Yet? I don’t know. But we will see. It’s all in the hands of the Almighty,” Johnson told the media in Cape Town.

“Everybody thinks it’s interim, and there is no such thing as an interim coach. You take the team and you work until the team doesn’t need you anymore.

“So, I’m doing the best I can as the coach and taking this brand of football to the best we can for the last nine games.”
