Why Chiefs superfan ‘Papa Wawa’ supported Yanga against Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs superfan Vennetious Trudent Motswi, better known as ‘Papa Wawa’, has clarified why he was supporting Young Africans SC against Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns progressed to the semi-finals of the competition after defeating the Tanzanian giants 3-2 on penalties in the return leg at a packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium following a goalless draw in 90 time. The first-leg in Tanzania had also ended 0-0.

‘Papa Wawa’ was present in the stands in Pretoria, dressed in a Yanga jersey, singing and supporting alongside the Tanzanian fans.

The prominent Amakhosi supporter says he was only returning the favour to Yanga for what they once did to Chiefs a few years back.

He recalled the time when Yanga fans supported Chiefs against their rivals Simba SC in the 2021 Champions League quarter-final match.

“I was supporting Young Africans because Yanga supported us when we were playing Simba SC in Tanzania,” Papa Wawa told FARPost.

“We were returning the favour to Young Africans; they are not an enemy to Kaizer Chiefs. No! The last time I checked, I was not a Mamelodi Sundowns fan, so why would I support them? One thing for sure: I will never support Sundowns.

“They are my rivals. People must understand that football is a very competitive game. Sundowns represent themselves, not the whole of South Africa. If they win the trophy, it doesn’t go to the SAFA trophy cabinet; it goes straight to their trophy cabinet.

“When Chiefs played in the 2021 Champions League final against Al Ahly, the whole country was against us supporting Al Ahly. It was even worse when we lost in the final, we were a laughing stock in the whole country.”
