Maritzburg star out to emulate Nengomasha and Katsande’s legacy

One of the Zimbabweans in the PSL has declared his desire to emulate Tinashe Nengomasha and Willard Katsande’s ‘gritty midfielder’ legacy.

Nengomasha and Katsande carved a niche as the toughest and gritty defensive midfielders during their time at SA football giants Kaizer Chiefs.

The General, as Nengomasha is known, spent a decade at Amakhosi before switching to Bidvest Wits en route to his retirement. During his time, he won several accolades and was Chiefs’ best player during the 2003/2004 season. In addition, they won the PSL league title that season.

He was named the PSL ‘Footballer of the Year’ for the 2003/2004 season and the ‘Player’s Player of the Season’.

As Nengomasha was about to leave the club, Katsande emerged to fill in the void. He was lured from Ajax Cape Town [now Cape Town Spurs].

Katsande joined Chiefs in August 2011, where he rose to be one of the toughest midfielders to grace the PSL. He also captained The Glamour Boys at some point.

The former Zimbabwe Warriors captain retired in 2022. Ben Musaka, who joined Maritzburg United this year, is eyeing to follow in the footsteps of the two Zimbabwean legends. He joined from Zimbabwe’s PSL giants, CAPS United.

Though, the 27-year-old is in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, he believes he can rise to reach Nengomasha and Katsande’s level.

BEN MUSAKA OUT TO EMULATE NENGOMASHA AND KATSANDE’S GRITTY MIDFIELDER LEGACY

In an interview with FARPost, Musaka said: “My fellow countrymen, who played in a similar position, went on to become legendary figures in the PSL.

“Tinashe Nengomasha, Willard Katsande were phenomenon central defensive midfielders. I seek to emulate them and perform to the best of my abilities.”

Musaka, however, is focused on helping The Team of Choice return to the DStv Premiership. “This league has always been a league of surprises so all I have to say is, let’s see till the last game,” he said.

“My goal is to get a shot at winning and being promoted, and of course, it’s not going to be easy because here, every game is a final.

“So we have to be prepared. And I have the belief that if we are well prepared, we will only see how it goes.”
