The day Brandon Petersen came to Luke Fleurs’ rescue at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has opened up about the day he shared a special moment with Luke Fleurs as he rescued the defender from a situation.

Fleurs lost his life after he was shot and killed in a carjacking incident. This tragic incident happened on Wednesday, 3 April, at a fuel station in Roodepoort [corner of 14th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Avenue].

The 24-year-old had yet to make his Chiefs professional debut. He had joined his dream club as a free agent in October 2023.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, police made some progress as they arrested six suspects linked to the case. A day after, on Thursday, the defender’s memorial service was held at FNB Stadium.

The alleged killers appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court for the first time on Friday. The case was then postponed to 19 April. The suspects remain in custody, waiting for bail application.

HOW BRANDON PETERSON HELPED LUKE FLEURS

The Chiefs shot-stopper says he helped Fleurs by giving him a lift when the former SA junior international had run out of petrol on his way to a training session at the Kaizer Chiefs Village.

“It’s a story I love to share and look up to. One morning on my way to training, I saw a message in the [WhatsApp] group where Luke said he’s stuck [with petrol],” said Peterson.

“I called him and asked him where he was, and he said he was by the corner. When I got there. When he got into the car, he was like, ‘Eish Bhiza, I must have forgotten to put in the petrol’.

“He was like, ‘I thought my zero was going to take me there [to the fuel station], I trust my zero’. That was Luke, pushing boundaries, pushing the limits.

“If someone tells him he can’t do something, he will make sure that he tries to do it. 90 per cent of the time, 99 per cent of the time he will be successful.”
