How many points Sundowns need to clinch league title?
Mamelodi Sundowns are on course to hoist their seventh consecutive league title. Here’s a look at who else can still “mathematically” win it and how many points the Brazilians need to wrap it up.
“Points machine” as Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro recently labelled them, Bafana Ba Style have been once again unstoppable in the league this season.
They haven’t lost a single match in the DStv Premiership, winning 16 and drawing five out of 21 they have played so far.
Should they remain unconquerable in the next nine league matches, they would become the first PSL club to finish the entire league season without a loss. But fatigue seems to have crept in as they have been finding it difficult to come out with convincing victories as they usually do.
As much as they dominate games with ball possession, low blocks that are being applied by the teams against them lately make life difficult for the Tshwane giants.
The league champions bottled a 2-0 lead in a match against Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium on Monday night. Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende both scored outside the box to put Bafana Ba Style ahead.
However, Augustine Mahlonoko’s easy tap-in and a late goal from Gabadinho Mhango gave the Dube Birds a point against Rulani Mokwena’s men.
WHAT SUNDOWNS NEED TO DO TO WIN THE LEAGUE? WHO ELSE CAN STILL ‘MATHEMATICALLY’ WIN IT?
As it stands, only Masandawana can reach a 64-point mark. Currently, they have 53, meaning they need 11 points from their remaining nine matches to claim the title unless Stellenbosch FC and some clubs from the chasing pack drop points.
Stellies, Orlando Pirates, Sekhukhune United, TS Galaxy, SuperSport United and Cape Town City can still “mathematically” win the league.
Kaizer Chiefs and the rest of the other teams are out as they can’t get to the number of points [53] that Sundowns have collected even if they win all their remaining matches.
