Fawaaz Basadien on what’s behind Stellenbosch FC cohesion

Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien has explained what remains key to the team’s unity as the Western Cape outfit continues to go above and beyond.

Stellies’ success didn’t happen overnight, as the club has been building the team over the recent seasons under the tutelage of Steve Barker.

Despite being a selling side, they have been consistently producing top youth talent which they have utilised in forging the winning culture at the club.

The 2023/24 season is considered a successful campaign for the side from Winelands.

Stellies reached the MTN8 semi-finals but couldn’t secure a spot in the final, with Orlando Pirates going through thanks to an away goal advantage after the match ended 2-2 on aggregate.

In December last year, Barker’s troops won the Carling Knockout Cup, defeating TS Galaxy on penalties in the final, which was held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

This was their first silverware in the top-flight since they were promoted in the 2019/20 season.

Basadien says they put the club’s interests before their own.

In spite of enormous contributions from some of the individuals, he insisted they don’t have a “superstar” in the team.

“We have no superstars and everybody is pulling in the same direction,” said Basadien in an interview with FARPost.

“We understand that the goal of the team is more important than the individual role and we buy into our clearly defined roles as individuals and as a team as set out by our coaches.

“Hence there is great synergy with our coaches.”

Stellenbosch are in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals after hammering SuperSport United 4-0 in the Last-eight clash at Danie Craven Stadium this past Saturday.

They have been drawn against Mamelodi Sundowns and the semi-finals dates will be confirmed in due course by the PSL.
