‘I was disappointed, but…’: Khiba on Chiefs’ departure

Former Kaizer Chiefs youth player Thato Khiba has opened up on his departure at Amakhosi before he could be promoted to the first team.

The 27-year-old footballer was released by the Soweto giants back in August 2018. Khiba was playing for the Glamour Boys’ Reserve side at the time.

When he left Chiefs, he joined the now-defunct Uthongathi FC, where he spent the whole 2018/2019 season.

The following season, he turned out for amateur side African All Stars in the SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League.

In July 2021, he signed for Marumo Gallants, who were competing in the DStv Premiership at that time. However, following Bahlabane ba Ntwa’s relegation from the SA elite league last campaign, the player jumped ship.

He then joined TS Galaxy in July 2023 on a three-year deal. The contract has an option to extend by a further two years.

In an interview with FARPost, Khiba stated that he was “disappointed” to have been released by the club, but that has helped him grow as a footballer.

“Yes, I was disappointed, but it also gave me some motivation to go out there and work harder,” Khiba told this website.

“It also helped me to add more skills and knowledge of the game so that if ever I get an opportunity to play for the club again, I come back stronger and wiser.

“This also inspired my form, and the healthy competition within the players in teams I have been playing for. It developed the willingness to succeed in my career.”

So far, the player has been impressive for the Rockets, scoring two goals and contributing two assists. He has played 11 league matches out of 21 games the Mpumalanga-based outfit has played in the DStv Premiership.
