Kaitano Tembo opens up about Zimbabwe Warriors job

Former SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo has opened up about the contentious Zimbabwe Warriors head coach job.

Over the years, former SuperSport United coach Kaitano has been mentioned as a perfect candidate for the Warriors job. Currently, Norman Mapeza, formerly with Chippa United, is the Zimbabwe head coach, albeit on an interim basis.

Mapeza took over from former Jose Mourinho’s assistant Baltermar Brito, whose short-term contract was not renewed at the end of December.

When FARPost asked about taking the Warriors job, Tembo responded: ” I am a coach, I can coach anywhere.” He, however, could not shed light on whether the Zimbabwe Football Association [ZIFA] approached him for his services.

Up to now, the 53-year-old has never coached in Zimbabwe. Aside from SuperSport, he has also coached Sekhukhune United and Richards Bay FC.

“I’ve gained a lot of experience, and for me, I’m a coach, and when you’re a coach, you don’t say I don’t want to coach. If the opportunity comes for me to coach the Warriors, I’m available. I’m a coach, and I can coach anywhere.

“I won’t say they haven’t approached me, but the most important thing to say is that I am available.”

He also revealed that several PSL clubs are vying for his services as the 2023/24 season nears its end.

“There are a few inquiries, there are few clubs that made inquiries, but you must understand that the season has about seven games to play, so everything will come to shape when the season ends.

“But at the moment, I am not just sitting. I’m also trying to look at myself, work and do a few refresher courses,” Tembo told FARPost.

Tembo has worked under Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter and Eric Tinkler. He was an assistant coach to Hunt, Baxter and  Tinkler before taking over as head coach in 2018 at SuperSport.

During his time as coach at the club, Tembo reached two MTN8 Cup finals, winning his first trophy against Highlands Park in 2019.
