Ernst Middendorp counting on Chiefs to save him from relegation

Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp says he will have to rally behind his former club, Kaizer Chiefs, to do him a favour against Richards Bay FC.

Middendorp’s troops, Spurs, are in serious trouble of being relegated from the DStv Premiership with six matches remaining.

They lost 1-0 to Sekhukhune United on Saturday evening, their 18th loss of the season. CT Spurs now languish at the bottom of the log with 12 points, five behind Richards Bay, who are second from the bottom.

With the Rich Boyz taking on Amakhosi at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday, Middendorp says he is a fan of Chiefs at the moment.

WHY ERNST MIDDENDORP IS RALLYING BEHIND KAIZER CHIEFS

“We have the game now against Richards Bay on Friday. But at the moment, we have to be fans of Kaizer Chiefs,” he said.

Cape Town Spurs are in danger of facing the chop

“We hope they do their job [on Sunday] and take the game against Richards Bay seriously. We play Richards Bay [next].

“At the moment, it’s five points [gap], and for the Friday evening game, we can probably reduce the distance. It’s our job at this moment to make it happen and reduce the gap by two points,” he said.

WHY RESULTS ARE NOT FORTHCOMING FOR STRUGGLING CAPE TOWN SPURS

“It’s not about wins. In the Sekhukhune game, [we deserve] a point, against [Moroka Swallows a point, Chippa a point. You saw the game against [Mamelodi] Sundowns; it would have been possible in the second half to get a point.

“That makes it already four points. But that’s what we have to take seriously into consideration; it’s not about winning,” he explained.

“It’s just that at this moment it’s frustratingly shocking that we have these nonsense individual errors that we find ourselves in a terrible situation. It’s totally unnecessary.”
