Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni has been given another lifeline to revive his football career.
Over the weekend, Sangweni resurfaced at the SAFA KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League side UMsinga United, who recently qualified for the provincial playoffs.
UMsinga were crowned as Stream B winners with 43 points after 18 games following their 2-0 win over Mkhambathi FC away from home this past Sunday. Sangweni was part of the matchday squad.
The last time Sangweni tried his luck with a top-flight side was back in 2022 when he was training with Marumo Gallants with the hope of securing a contract but failed to impress the club’s technical team
The victory confirmed UMsinga’s place in the KZN ABC Motsepe League provincial playoffs, where they will battle it out with Stream A winners Njampela FC.
Njampela finished as Stream A leaders after amassing 38 points from 16 games under the guidance of coach Tshepo Motsoeneng.
The provincial playoffs winner will represent KZN at the national playoffs. The date for provincial playoffs will be announced in due course by the SAFA KZN.
THAMSANQA SANGWENI EXPECTED TO HELP UMSINGA IN THE PLAYOFFS
The 34-year-old footballer will be expected to help his new side achieve its ultimate goal of qualifying for the ABC League national playoffs and possibly getting promoted to the Motsepe Foundation Championship next season.
Sangweni comes in with extensive experience, having also represented teams such as AmaZulu FC, Chippa United, Maritzburg United, and Richards Bay FC, to name a few.
In the lower division [amateur league], he turned out for BCM Stars and Peace Makers.
The Empangeni-born defensive midfielder made headlines when he moved from Chippa to Pirates on a two-year deal in 2017, following in his brother’s [Siyabonga Sangweni] footsteps, who had played there for five years.
