Latest on Cape Town City FC trialist goalkeeper Tom Amos
DStv Premiership side Cape Town City FC recently ran the rule over highly-rated Swedish goalkeeper Tom Amos.
Amos, a talented goalkeeper with a reputation for lightning-fast reflexes and impressive shot-stopping skills, is seeking a new challenge in the vibrant South African football scene.
The 26-year-old, who has spent his career in his native Sweden and Israel, is eager to test himself in a new environment. Amos terminated his contract with Israeli club Hapoel Beer Sheva following the outbreak of war.
He set his sights on the South African top-flight, citing the energy and passion of the local game as a major draw. “He’s always been intrigued by the intensity of the game and the unique style of play in South Africa,” a source close to the goalkeeper said.
Amos is known for his commanding presence in the box, his ability to organise his defence and his distribution skills. His experience in the often physical lower leagues could be an asset when facing South Africa’s powerful strikers.
WHAT IS THE LATEST ON TOM AMOS AT CAPE TOWN CITY FC?
CT City recently handed Darren Keet a two year-contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2026.
The 34-year-old joined City from Cape Umoya United in July 2021 and has gone on to keep 23 clean sheets in 61 appearances across all competitions.
After three weeks of training with the club, Amos has since stopped. Although he impressed, indications are that the club is not willing to sign the goalkeeper immediately.
They have 31-year-old goalie Bongani Mpandle deputising Keet. In addition, the Citizens are not willing to give up the remaining slot for an additional foreigner at the moment.
They recently added Namibia international Aprocius Petrus to their ranks, bringing the number of foreign nationals to five.
They already had Darwin Gonzalez, Ramazani Tshimanga and Joaquim Paciencia. Another Namibian, Prins Tjiueza, was deregistered due to an injury and could return ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Nonetheless, Amos’s management team is likely to explore the AmaZulu FC and Golden Arrows options, who are reportedly in need of a reliable shot-stopper.
The talented goalie was first offered to Cape Town Spurs, but the Premiership returnees did not have a slot for a foreigner.
