Mike Makaab provides latest update on Manqoba Mngqithi’s future
Football agent Mike Makaab has provided the latest update on the future of his client Manqoba Mngqithi at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mngqithi, who is Sundowns’ senior coach was in recent weeks linked to the Kaizer Chiefs head coaching position.
However, as reported by FARPost, Amakhosi are not pursuing him and the coach’s contract with Sundowns is set to expire in June 2024.
He joined Sundowns in 2013 from Golden Arrows as the assistant coach of then-head coach Pitso Mosimane.
After Mosimane left Masandawana to join Al Ahly, Mngqithi took over as the co-coach alongside Rulani Mokwena between 2020 and 2022. In the previous season, the tactician assumed the senior coach role while Mokwena was named the sole head coach at Downs.
Meanwhile, Mngqithi is one of the highly-rated coaches in South Africa after proving his tactical acumen with Golden Arrows when they won the 2008 MTN8. Arrows beat Ajax Cape Town 6-1 in the final.
Since his arrival at Sundowns, the 53-year-old coach has won a handful of trophies, including the prestigious CAF Champions League in 2016 and the African Football League [AFL] earlier this season.
But now, with the 2023/24 season nearing its end, Mngqithi’s future at Sundowns remains uncertain.
WHAT MIKE MAKAAB SAID ABOUT MANQOBA MNGQITHI’S FUTURE
With only a month left before the coach’s contract comes to an end, Makaab says Mngqithi’s future will be decided in the next two weeks.
“Manqoba Mngqithi’s contract is coming to an end in June with Mamelodi Sundowns but we hope his contract will be renewed,” Makaab said in an interview with FARPost.
“As it stands now, we are hoping that in the next two weeks, we’ll know what the future holds for Mngqithi because we’re going to have a meeting with Sundowns.
“We hope he will remain at Sundowns. His commitment is with the current club, and that’s going to be our primary focus.”
