Njabulo Ngcobo’s future uncertain as PSL side enters the fray
The future of Kaizer Chiefs defender Njabulo Ngcobo has been thrown into further uncertainty with reports that a DStv Premiership side has entered the race to secure his signature.
The talented centre-back’s contract with Chiefs is set to expire soon, and a contract renewal seems imminent. However, the new suitor’s sudden interest could complicate matters. The Durban-based club is reportedly keen to bolster its defensive ranks, and Ngcobo’s skillset and potential fit their ambitions perfectly.
Ngcobo has not lived up to his billing in the Amakhosi backline. The former Moroka Swallows defender has struggled for game time since joining the Soweto giants three seasons ago. He has 29 starts and 11 sub appearances in three seasons.
The 29-year-old has made seven starts this season. However, his qualities that include composure, reading of the game and ball-playing ability are still attractive. Indications are that AmaZulu FC are keen on reuniting with the talented defender who first joined their reserve side in 2016.
The situation puts Ngcobo in a strong position. He now has the option to remain at a club he knows well or seek a fresh challenge with his former club, AmaZulu. The defender will undoubtedly weigh both offers carefully, considering playing time, ambition, and potential compensation packages.
HOW DOES NJABULO NGCOBO’S FUTURE LOOK WITH KAIZER CHIEFS?
The Naturena-based side recently lost 24-year-old defender Luke Fleurs after he was shot dead. The former SuperSport United star was seen as a long-term option in central defence. Although Fleurs had not featured yet for the club, his death leaves a void in that central defence position. The situation means Chiefs would be eager to consider keeping Ngcobo at the club.
Their other alternative would be to go into the market and bring in a top defender if they let go of Ngcobo. A source close to the player has indicated that Ngcobo is weighing up his options carefully. While AmaZulu’s offer is tempting, the chance to continue his successful journey with Chiefs remains a strong possibility.
“He’s waiting to see if Chiefs still value him despite the limited game time. He wants to play football and that may be a big factor. AmaZulu is also an option for him but the package will have a bearing on whether he takes the deal,” the source said.
