Retired PSL star Tsweu Mokoro picks his candidates for Midfielder of the Season
Former SuperSport United midfielder Tsweu Mokoro has singled out players that he believes are the best-performing midfielders this season in the PSL.
The curtain is almost closing for the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season that saw some players stand out and put their hands up for the many PSL individual awards.
Mokoro, who has also had stints at Moroka Swallows and AmaZulu FC, has picked Orlando Pirates player Patrick Maswanganyi and Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena as his best three midfielders this season.
The retired footballer, who now heads his own football academy in Centurion, Gauteng, has also hailed Zwane for being a leader on and off the field.
“I would go with Pirates midfielder Maswanganyi; he has been doing well since he arrived at Pirates,” Mokoro told FARPost.
“But also looking at Sundowns, their players are always competing, [Themba] Zwane and [Teboho] Mokoena. For me, these are the top performers in the midfield this season,” he said.
TSWEU MOKORO EXPLAINS HIS CHOICES FOR THE MIDFIELDER OF THE SEASON
“I think Maswanganyi has brought something special to Pirates. That boy is a real number 10,” he said.
“If he remains this focused, he will go very far. He can use both feet; he plays real football with a bit of spice. So I like how he plays.”
Mokoro added: “I think Themba Zwane has changed a lot in our football, on and off the field.
“You will never hear bad things about him. He is a real role model, I also think he is a perfect number 10. After Teko Modise retired, we struggled to get a proper number 10, but Zwane arrived and picked up from there.
“A player like Teboho Mokoena is rare to find. A player who can play as a defensive midfielder but who scores a lot of goals. That boy doesn’t just get tired; he has endurance and the capacity to go forward and defend again. We have not had those kind of midfielders in a long time.”
