Given Msimango reveals what led to Chiefs’ downfall in the 2023/24 season

Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango has had his say on what led to Amakhosi’s downfall in the current 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

The Soweto giants’ campaign has been a mixed bag. Through 25 matches in the SA elite league, they’ve only managed nine wins, drawing six and losing a concerning 10 games.

Their struggles are reflected in their goal difference, scoring just 21 goals while conceding 20, despite managing 11 clean sheets.

Chiefs are now mathematically out of the DStv Premiership title race and also missed out on the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup, and Nedbank Cup. Therefore, this will be Amakhosi’s ninth season without winning any silverware. The last time Chiefs won a major trophy was in 2015 when they lifted the PSL title.

GIVEN MSIMANGO ON KAIZER CHIEFS’ DOWNFALL THIS SEASON

The 26-year-old footballer has divulged what has let Chiefs down this season as the trophy drought continues at Naturena.

“I think an element of inconsistency started to crip in. We let ourselves down in that aspect,” Msimango told journalists during Chiefs’ open media day on Tuesday, 30 April 2024.

“We would play two games well, and the third and fourth games, we would become not as consistent. I think in this highly competitive league, you need to win games and convert your chances.

“I think that has been one of our downfalls this season. But is something that we have noted and something we intend to work on going forward irrespective of whatever changes may come within the club.”

Msimango continued: “We as players are focused on the job at hand and try to improve in each of every training session and contribute to the success of the team.”

Chiefs will be in action on Thursday, 2 May, against Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership tie at FNB Stadium. The game will start at 19:30.
