Newly crowned DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns aren’t resting on their laurels as they are now eyeing a new league record after securing their seventh consecutive league title with six games to spare.
The Brazilians thrashed Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 on Thursday night under the lights of FNB Stadium. They completed a double over Amakhosi, mirroring their 2-1 victory in the first round.
With only 24 matches played, Sundowns have already amassed a staggering 62 points.
Speaking after the match, coach Rulani Mokwena revealed their ambition to surpass the club’s record of 71 points set in the 2015/16 season under Pitso Mosimane.
RULANI MOKWENA – โWHY NOT GO FOR IT?โ
โMan plan but God decides,โ said Mokwena when asked whether theyโd aim surpassing 71-point mark.
โThis is where we are, football is about winning, losing or drawing. So, you enter the last couple of games with that. Iโm happy to see that weโre playing more without the fear of not losing.
โWe went through the period where our performances were based on not losing games and we had to remind players that we got so far because we were playing to win games.

โAnd Iโm happy to see that thereโs bit of a shift in the last four, five games, the mentality has shifted a little bit towards that direction.
โAnd the 71 points, why not? Why not go for it? Itโs there, if you get it, kudos, if you donโt get it, unlucky and you try again next time. Why not go for the next target?
โEvery mountain is there to be attempted to be climbed and the moment you climb one mountain, this is [for] the most successful people and what I always say about successful people, they look for another mountain to climb.
โSo, why not go for 71 points and break it because last season we got to 70. So, itโs possible, why not?โ
SUNDOWNS CHASING TREBLE
Meanwhile, Sundowns are still in the Nedbank Cup and will be locking horns with Stellenbosch FC in the semi-final on Sunday, 5 May at the Danie Craven Stadium.
They will be looking to secure a spot in the final as they aim for a treble having won the league and the African Football League earlier this season.
