The hunt for a new leader at Kaizer Chiefs continues, and legendary goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has weighed in on the vacant coaching position, throwing his support behind two big names.
The Soweto giants are on the hunt for a permanent head coach to fill the void left by Molefi Ntseki’s departure earlier this season. Ntseki’s tenure was cut short following a series of disappointing results that left fans frustrated.
Tensions escalated when some supporters expressed their disapproval by throwing objects at the coach. After Ntseki’s sacking, Chiefs roped in Cavin Johnson to take over the hot seat on an interim basis after initially joining Amakhosi as the Head of the Academy.
Chiefs’ search for a coach has been fueled by their inconsistent run of form, which left them sitting eighth on the DStv Premiership log standings after 27 matches.
Johnson has been in charge of 19 games at the Naturena-based side in all competitions, winning six times, drawing five, and losing on eight occasions.
The Glamour Boys were also eliminated from the 2024 Nedbank Cup by a Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Milford FC, who won 5-4 on penalties two months ago. In addition, they missed out on the MTN8 trophy and Carling Knockout Cup and are at risk of finishing the season outside the top eight.
In their recent league match, Chiefs played to a 2-2 draw against TS Galaxy at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Tuesday night.
WHO ARE THE TWO SUGGESTED COACHES FOR CHIEFS?
With Chiefs set to make changes to their technical team for the 2024/25 campaign, retired goalie Baloyi says Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mngqithi are the two coaches who can fit perfectly.
“Looking at Chiefs right now, I think when we include looking at players and the names that have been thrown around, will they work? I don’t know,” Baloyi told FARPost.
“The two people I will put on my list would be a Pitso [Mosimane], and if you can’t get Pitso, then you go for Manqoba Mngqithi. If not those two, I don’t see any local coach or even foreign coach in the country who’s good enough to steer the ship.
“Unfortunately, we are going to have to go outside the county, but I would say, be careful if you go outside, more especially outside the continent. If you go outside, let it be someone who understands the African continent, someone who’s working on the African continent.”
The ex-Chiefs goalkeeper added: “Again, if you go to Europe or South America, you’ll give that person the same amount of money that you don’t want to pay Pitso. So, it’s going to be a futile exercise if you go to South America or Europe to get a coach because you are going be paying them the same amount you could be paying Pitso or very close to it.
“Now you bringing in someone who doesn’t understand the culture because, again, that’s the most important thing. Understanding the culture of our country and not just football.”
