Tshepo Motsoeneng names his top picks for Goalkeeper of the Season

Former SuperSport United and Santos FC goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng has named three goalkeepers he believes deserve to be nominated for the DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award.

Motsoeneng feels the three goal-minders deserve recognition for their determination and for giving their all between the sticks this term.

During his playing career, Motsoeneng represented several teams, including AmaZulu FC, Free State Stars, and Chippa United.

According to Motsoeneng, Ronwen Williams from Mamelodi Sundowns, Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United, and Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine have displayed a consistent level of performance that should make them contenders for the Premiership Golden Glove accolade.

In the current DStv Premiership campaign, Williams has played in 19 games, keeping 14 clean sheets and conceding only six goals. Across all competitions, he has played 42 games, keeping 29 clean sheets and conceding 15 goals.

Nwabali, 27, has played 23 league games this season and kept 10 clean sheets while conceding 21 goals. He has also participated in 26 matches across all competitions, conceding 25 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets for the Chilli Boys.

Chaine of Pirates has played 15 league matches, conceding 12 goals and keeping six clean sheets. Overall, Chaine has featured in 25 games in all competitions, conceding 17 goals and achieving 12 clean sheets.

TSHEPO MOTSOENENG SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON THE DSTV PREMIERSHIP GOLDEN GLOVE

The Njampela coach in the ABC Motsepe League, Motsoeneng, has revealed why he picked the above-mentioned goalkeepers as his preferred candidates for the DStv Premiership Golden Glove award.

“A lot of guys have raised their hands. We have got Sipho Chaine. I know he was injured at some point. He did well for Pirates this season,” Motsoeneng told FARPost.

“You have got the goalkeeper from Chippa [Stanley Nwabali]. He went as far into the finals of the 2023 AFCON tournament. I know it’s a continental tournament, but it also affects Chippa, and they are also in a good position in the league. Thanks to how he has been performing.

“You then look at Ronwen Williams; he has been ever-green and fighting to stay on top. I think is going to be interesting between Nwabali and Williams.”

‘IT’S NOT ONLY ABOUT CLEAN SHEETS’

Motsoeneng stated that it’s not just about clean sheets but also the goalkeeper’s contribution to the team.

“I know people look at clean sheets, and it’s not only about clean sheets. It’s the contribution of the goalkeeper in a club that sets the other one apart from the other one.

“For example, there was a point where Free State Stars was a relegation team, Kennedy Mweene was in goals, and Steve Komphela was the head coach. The team ended up finishing fifth, and Kennedy Mweene was named the Goalkeeper of the Season,” he added.

“So, I know people are voting for people, but honestly, we need to look at this thing of goalkeeping to say what was the contribution of this goalkeeper in this club. We also need to look at the balance of the budget of the clubs where other clubs are not privileged like other ones and can’t do things easily. But we will see between the three guys who will walk away with the award.”
