Pitso Mosimane’s Abha Club moves one step above relegation zone

Pitso Mosimane’s Abha Club moved one step above the Saudi Pro League relegation zone after their 0-0 draw with Damac FC on Friday evening.

The match was played at the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium. Pitso Mosimane’s Abha Club were handed a lifeline by Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Al Nassr when they beat Al Akhdoud, who are also in the relegation mix.

Hence they came into this one, riding on the possibility of rising to 14th on the table and ultimately leaving the relegation zone.

However Pitso Mosimane’s Abha Club only managed to move to 15th position. In this one, there was nothing much to write home about, as the teams were deadlocked at the half-break until full-time.

Previous, they beat Al-Ittihad 3-1. This means, Mosimane has led the club to four wins and three draws. And they have five losses in his stay at the club so far.

In truth, they have poor records especially in defending, where they have conceded 27 goals in 12 games.

The rate they concede has been a problem even before Mosimane took charge of the team. In total, they have let in 79 goals in 31 games, translating to two goals per game.

But it is at this point that they need to be solid in defending as the goal difference could prove to be decisive in the relegation fight.

At this point, they have the worst goal difference, with just 34 goals scored against a staggering 81 conceded.

It remains to be seen if Mosimane’s magic will work this time around, considering how the team has fared. With 29 points in 31 games, Abha need more than a miracle to retain their slot in the league.

After Damac, they travel for date with Al Khaleej and then Mosimane’s former bosses, Al Ahli.

They will wrap up the season with a clash against Al Hazm, who currently sit at the bottom. How the likes of Al-Raed, Al Akhdoud, Al Tai and Al Riyadh fare at this point. Results elsewhere will be a major determinant of where Abha will end this season.

And Mosimane will be hoping that the quartet drop points, while they pick as many points as they to survive.
