Dramatic Finish! Stellenbosch FC beat Sundowns to DStv Diski Challenge title

In a nail-biting climax to the season, Stellenbosch FC beat Mamelodi Sundowns to the 2023/24 DStv Diski Challenge title after claiming a 4-3 victory against Golden Arrows on Saturday in Tsakani.

The Stellies reserve team clinched the title in a dramatic fashion following an impressive performance against Arrows at Tsakane Stadium. They showed character as they fought back from 2-0 down at half-time to scoring four goals in the final 45 minutes.

Mervin Boji was the hero for the club, scoring a hat-trick to hand his Stellenbosch all the maximum points.

With the win over Arrows, Stellenbosch jumped to the summit of the reserve league log standings with 67 points to go one point ahead of Sundowns in second place.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MISS OUT ON THE TITLE ON THE LAST DAY

Meanwhile, the Sundowns reserve team defeated Moroka Swallows 6-0 at the same venue in the first match of the day. The victory over Swallows took Sundowns to a 66-point tally. But it was not enough to win the league and see them emulate the club’s senior team, who recently won the 2023/24 DStv Premiership title.

Masandawana netted all six goals in the second half of the match, as Swallows were torn apart by the impressive attack.

Stellenbosch FC beat Golden Arrows 4-3 in the DDC to clinch the title

The DDC campaign went down to the wire, and the Brazilians needed Golden Arrows to do them a favour by beating Stellenbosch to win the title. Interestingly, Arrows scored two early goals against Stellenbosch, but the Winelands managed to turn the scoreline around.

Stellenbosch won its second DDC title in two years after winning its first one during the 2021/22 season.

In addition, the two Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, finished third and fifth on the table with 54 and 51 points, respectively.
