6 CT Spurs players DStv Prem clubs should target after relegation

Cape Town Spurs’ relegation from the DStv Premiership may be a setback for the club, but it could open doors for some of their talented players to secure deals with top-flight teams.

Here are six players who have caught the eye and could make a significant impact in the Premiership:

1. Asenele Velebayi:

A pure winger with untapped potential. Capable of playing on either flank, Velebayi’s dynamism and goal-scoring instincts have caught the eye of two DStv Premiership sides.

His abilities to influence the game and contribute offensively make him a promising prospect for Premiership clubs looking to strengthen their attack. At just 21 years old, he still has ample time to further develop into a top player. Velebayi scored one goal in 21 league outings.

2. Rushwin Dortley:

A versatile defender who can excel in central or wide positions, Dortley’s defensive stability has set him apart. The 22-year-old’s calmness under pressure and tactical understanding have been noticed, making him a potential asset for any Premiership club defence.

A left-footed defender, he is a rare find and has previously caught the eye of Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch Fc. He played 24 matches in the league and two in cup competitions this season.

3. Galdiel Kamagi:

Kamagi, a left-back with electrifying speed and skill, is an all-rounder with the stamina to cover both ends of the pitch. Kamagi has the knack for scoring all-important goals like he did against Orlando Pirates.

He was a menace for CT Spurs’ opponents, outwitting defenders and delivering threatening crosses. The Tanzanian’s two goals and two assists in just 12 DStv Premiership fixtures are a testament to his capabilities. His direct approach and flair in the final third make him an enticing prospect for Premiership teams. His loan spell from Singida Big Stars comes to an end next month, but indications are that he would be eager to stay in the South African top-flight.

4. Ashley Cupido:

A promising young forward with a knack for finding the back of the net, Cupido’s intelligent movement and finishing were crucial for Spurs’ promotion to the DStv Premiership. The striker, who just turned 22 earlier this month, scored six goals and provided one assist in 25 matches in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

His potential to develop into a prolific goalscorer has previously caught the attention of Premiership clubs seeking to invest in young talent. He could still be of interest to many teams.

5. Chumani Butsaka:

A versatile footballer, he did well under different coaches and in various positions—as a 10 or right winger and as an 8. His consistent performance across these roles demonstrates his adaptability and talent. At just 22, he showed great promise for further development in his career. Certainly, a player that teams would be looking at to strengthen ahead of next season. He scored one goal and provided two assists in 25 games.

6. Luke Baartman:

A rising star at just 17 years old, this promising striker has caught the eye of overseas teams. He is certainly one for the future. In his first season in the top-flight, he has scored two goals in nine outings. His exceptional movement, finishing, seeming hunger, and innate sense of timing make him a constant threat in the box, demonstrating a knack for being in the right place at the right time.
