VTM coach explains Sifiso Myeni’s surprise switch

Botswana Premier League side VTM FC’s coach Reuben Chikoti has explained Sifiso Myeni’s surprise switch.

The former Orlando Pirates man signed for VTM back in August 2022, when the side was still competing in Botswana’s first division.

The 35-year-old footballer has put in some good displays, playing a key role in helping VTM gain promotion to Botswana’s top flight.

Myeni used to operate as a right-winger, driving forward with the ball, supporting the attack, and creating goal-scoring opportunities.

However, he has since switched to a central midfield position where he is excelling. Chikoti has revealed why he opted to convert the ex-SuperSport United player from the right-wing position and deploy him as a 10.

Chikoti noted that the main reason is that Myeni is gradually ageing and wide areas are more demanding for someone of his age.

“Well, I can say that’s my philosophy – passing and movement because that’s what I believe in,” said Chikoti.

“Players cannot keep the same position for the rest of their lives. With their experience, I feel they can play any position and handle any pressure.

“But why we removed him [Sifiso Myeni] from the wings, it’s because of the age. The demand from the wide areas and looking at the age as well is too much. So, where I feel he can make one pass or two passes that can kill off the opponents that’s where you saw him play.”

VTM are currently placed eighth in the Botswana Premier League with 32 points from 26 outings.

The club’s next league assignment will be against Matabele FC away from home on Sunday, 19 May 2024. The game will start at 15:00 at Dinaledi Academy Stadium.
