Another record for Sundowns after win against Stellenbosch
DStv Premiership champions-elect Mamelodi Sundowns have surpassed another club’s record following a 1-0 win against Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Lesiba Nku scored the only goal of the match in the 66th minute after a cross from Thembinkosi Lorch.
The win sees Masandawana stretch to 72 points with two matches to play. They now surpass the 71 points set during the 2015/16 season under then-coach Pitso Mosimane.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS SET ANOTHER DSTV PREMIERSHIP RECORD
The home side were awarded a penalty-kick after a foul conceded by Bathusi Aubaas inside the 18-area box. But in-form striker Iqraam Rayners failed to convert after an excellent save by Bafana Bafana number one Ronwen Williams.
Peter Shalulile came close with just a minute remaining before half-time. But his header was too high after a cross by Lesiba Nku. The two times went to the half-time break at 0-0.
Sundowns showed more aggression in the early stages of the second half. Thembinkosi Lorch came close, but his right-footed shot from the left side of the box was saved by Stellenbosch goalkeeper Stephens. Sundowns eventually found the opening goal in the 66th minute.
Lesiba Nku converted from the six yard box to the bottom left corner after an assist by Thembinkosi Lorch. Lorch was withdrawn a few moments later after what looked like an ankle injury.
The home side also created a few more chances towards the dying minutes of the match, but it was not enough as Sundowns secured the three points.
MASANDAWANA TO FINISH THE CURRENT SEASON WITHOUT A DEFEAT?
It’s now 41 games unbeaten for Sundowns against any domestic team. It’s also win number 22 for Masandawana without a defeat, and they still have two more games to play. Meanwhile, Stellenbosch remain in second despite the defeat after their closest competitors, Orlando Pirates, also lost 1-0 to TS Galaxy.
