AmaZulu to make big decision on Hendrick Ekstein

DStv Premiership side AmaZulu FC look set to make a big decision on the future of midfielder Hendrick Ekstein.

Ekstein’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, raising questions about his future with Usuthu.

The 33-year-old has been a valuable asset to AmaZulu since joining the club in 2019. His composure on the ball, passing range, and tactical awareness bring a sense of control to the middle of the park.

Despite his age, Ekstein remains a regular starter, demonstrating his continued importance to the team.

He has made 27 appearances for Usuthu in all competitions this season. That has been accompanied by five-goal contributions [three goals and two assists].

The veteran midfielder’s experience is seen as also crucial for mentorship. He reportedly plays a vital role in guiding young talent within the AmaZulu squad.

WHAT DECISION ARE AMAZULU LIKELY TO MAKE ON HENDRICK EKSTEIN

Sources close to AmaZulu FC have indicated that the club is considering offering a new short-term contract extension to the experienced midfielder.

“AmaZulu’s decision regarding Ekstein’s future likely involves several considerations. He has done well and impressed to get a new deal. He plays a big role in mentoring youngsters.

“But the idea is to offer him a short-term extension, which would possibly be for a further year. This would allow him to continue contributing his experience while giving the club time to assess long-term options,” a source told FARPost.

The former Kaizer Chiefs player played 13 matches across all competitions for Usuthu during the 2022/23 season. He has already played double that number this season, demonstrating his growing influence.

The Bekkersdal-born star won Usuthu’s Mitsubishi Ambitious Player of the Quarter in April. AmaZulu’s fans voted Ekstein for this honour through the club’s social media platforms. He piped left-back Riaan Hanamub and central midfielder Celimpilo Ngema to win the accolade.
