Mokwena addresses Jayden Adams’ transfer rumours to Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has addressed the transfer rumours around Stellenbosch FC midfielder Jayden Adams.

Sundowns have reportedly shown interest in signing Adams for the 2024/25 DStv Premiership after his impressive season with Stellies.

The central midfielder has been one of the outstanding performers for Stellenbosch in the current season. Adams played a big role for Stellenbosch as they won the inaugural 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.

He made 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing eight assists for the Steve Barker-coached team.

Adams is in his fourth season with the Stellenbosch senior team since gaining promotion from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side in 2020.

Meanwhile, Adams’ impressive performances have not gone unnoticed after being selected in the Bafana Bafana squad that won a bronze medal at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

WHAT DID RULANI MOKWENA SAY ABOUT JAYDEN ADAMS?

With Adams making it to the wishlist of big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns, Mokwena says he’s yet to submit a report to senior management about players.

“It’s a difficult question [about signing Adams], at the moment, the answer is no,” Mokwena said. He had been asked if Sundowns would sign the star for next season.

“I haven’t submitted the report, that’s the starting point. I have to summarise the performances of the squad. Then I have to give a detailed report to the senior management and the sporting director [Flemming Berg]. We’ll get directives on where we need to strengthen.

“It’ll be very difficult to answer your question with a definite yes or no without having concluded my technical report.”

Sundowns have a galaxy of stars in their central midfield position. It means the 23-year-old will face stiff competition should he sign.

Masandawana currently have Tebogo Mokoena, Sipho Mbule, Sphelele Mkhulise, Rivaldo Coetzee, Bathusi Aubaas and, Marcelo Allende competing for a place in the holding midfield position.
