Cassius Mailula on target as Toronto FC claims emphatic win in Canadian Championship

Bafana Bafana attacker Cassius Mailula was on target for Toronto FC following their emphatic victory against CS Saint-Lauren in the Canadian Championship in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Toronto hammered CS Saint-Laurent 8-1 in the quarter-final, second leg at the BMO Field in Toronto. In the first leg, which was played earlier this month, Toronto claimed a 3-0 victory away from home.

As a result, the MLS outfit won 11-1 on aggregate, and they are through to the semi-finals of the competition – Canadian Championship

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star’s team made history, scoring eight goals in a single match for the first time. In addition, they set a new record in the tournament for the most goals scored by a team in a game.

The 22-year-old, who has been struggling for game time at the club, started the match in attack. Mailula was playing alongside former Napoli FC star Lorenzo Insigne.

The young attacker got his name on the scoresheet in the 50th minute to make it 4-0 for Toronto. He launched an attack before unleashing a powerful shot just outside the box that got deflected and hit the net.

Striker Deanre Kerr was unstoppable after netting four goals, while Derrick Etienne Jr. scored his debut goal for Toronto. In addition, Saint-Laurent scored an own goal, and Prince Owusu rounded out the scoring to make it eight.

Mailula’s goal saw him take his goal contribution in the competition to three goals in three matches. He has found the back of the net two times and grabbed an assist in the process.

‘Cash’ will be aiming to take his scoring form to the league as Toronto host FC Cincinnati in the early hours of Sunday, 26 May at BMO Field.
