Mokwena’s verdict on Peter Shalulile’s recent goal-scoring form

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has given his verdict on centre-forward Peter Shalulile’s recent goal-scoring form.

The Namibian international has struggled to replicate his form from last season in the current DStv Premiership campaign. He has been going through a rough patch, with injuries derailing his form.

However, Shalulile has regained his form since the 29th of April, when he scored a brace against TS Galaxy at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in a league tie. Masandawana defeated the Rockets 3-0, taking his league goal tally to six goals at the time.

Before that game, ‘Shasha’, as he is popularly known within the football circles, had gone seven league games without finding the back of the net.

Shalulile has now scored nine league goals following his solo goal against the Sead Ramovic-coached side, Galaxy, last night at Mbombela Stadium to help Sundowns claim a point in the 1-1 draw.

Overall, the Namibian skipper has netted 15 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for Bafana Ba Style this term and contributed four assists.

RULANI MOKWENA ON PETER SHALULILE’S FORM

In a post-match interview after their game against TS Galaxy, Mokwena put it on record that he never gave up on Shalulile because he knows that ‘Shasha’ is a very “special player.”

He went on to express his delight at how Shalulile had managed to find his mojo back when many people had given up on him.

“Peter [Shalulile], you know he is a very special player. I know, and I have said this before, a lot of people can give up on Peter Shalulile, but I will never give up on him at any given chance,” said Mokwena.

“In fact, I will never give up on any of these players because they never give up on me. So, I’m very proud and happy for Peter. I’m very proud of the mentality they all showed. Even with Aubrey [Modiba], I could see he was struggling with the legs. But to be so aggressive and to get the ball into the box and assist the team.”

The 37-year-old mentor continued: “I’m very proud of this group of players. I’m extremely grateful, and I appreciate their efforts. They are an amazing group of players.”

Shalulile has won three PSL Golden Boots, but this season, the talented frontman is unlikely to defend his accolade. Sundowns are left with one league game, and the current leading goal-scorer [Tshegofatso Mabasa] has 15 goals, six goals ahead of the Sundowns starman.
