Pirates legend Andries Sebola urges Bucs to raid Stellenbosch for star player

Orlando Pirates legend Andries Sebola has made his transfer window wishes known by urging his former club to target a star player currently shining at Stellenbosch FC for the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

In the past few transfer windows, Pirates have been signing some of the best players in the in the league and across the African continent to compete with the high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates’ robust approach in the transfer market has paid off, as they have won three domestic trophies in the last two seasons. The Buccaneers won the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup last season and defended the MTN8 title earlier this campaign.

Despite dominating the cup competitions, Pirates have struggled to challenge Sundowns in the DStv Premiership title. The Brazilians recently clinched their seventh successive league trophy.

With the end of the season transfer window looming, Sebola says Pirates need to sign Stellenbosch talisman Igraam Rayners.

The Bafana Bafana international has been in a good run of form after scoring 16 goals in all competitions and providing eight assists in 37 matches.

Rayners was also key for the Steve Barker-coached team as they won the inaugural 2023 Carling Knockout Cup against TS Galaxy in December 2023.

In an interview with FARPost, Sebola was asked which position Pirates need to reinforce, and he said: “I still believe that Pirates need to go outside the county [to scout for players] because most of the quality players are at Sundowns. So, looking at [Iqraam] Rayners, if they can convince Stellies to bring him on board, it will be good.

“Even though we know some coastal players, when they come to Gauteng, they struggle. He came to SuperSport United and he didn’t do well, then he went back to Stellenbosch and did well.

“So the striking force is where Orlando Pirates needs to reinforce, and also at the back. Those are the positions they need to reinforce.

“In the midfield, they have Miguel Timm and Thabang Monare, Thalente Mbatha and Patrick Maswanganyi, but I still feel they need one player in the midfield.

“And at the back they need two players, in the wings I think they have enough players, so I would say get two players upfront, two in the midfield and two at the back so they can compete in the league and on the continent.”
