‘Heartsore’ Cavin Johnson reacts to Chiefs worst finish, his future

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has reacted to the club’s failure to finish within the top eight as well as his future. Chiefs have finished the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season in position 10 after a 2-0 loss by Cape Town Spurs on Saturday.

It is the worst finish by the club in their history. It has also been nine years without a trophy by the most supported club in the country.

WHAT CAVIN JOHNSON SAID AFTER FAILURE TO QUALIFY FOR THE TOP EIGHT

“At the moment as I am sitting here all I am worried about, as a coach I am very heartsore,” he said.

“But for the future, I am gonna have to see. But right now, I am not happy,” added Johnson.

KAIZER CHIEFS COACH PLEADS FOR RESPECT FOR LONG SERVING GOALKEEPER ITUMELENG KHUNE

Johnson has also urged football people to pay respect to long-serving goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune. Khune was on the bench during the defeat by Spurs at the Cape Town Stadium.

“If you look anywhere in the world when a player has given his 25 years to a particular club and within that period he won games, trophies saved them positions. Whatever he is getting now is not what I have seen at other levels,” said Johnson.

“At a different level, I have seen people stand up when they see a man like that. So that’s the status I look for him to have in the future. When he walks into a stadium, people [need] stand up and greet him.

“We don’t have that culture unfortunately in this country but that makes you very proud to be a legend of a team that you have given 25 years of your life. So the next Itu walks into the stadium, you tell all the gold and black people that they need to stand up. Then you are giving him what he needs and that’s a legendary status.”
