Riveiro reacts to Tshegofatso Mabasa’s Golden Boot win

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has reacted to striker Tshegofatso Mabasa’s 2023/24 DStv Premiership Golden Boot win.

Mabasa racked up 16 goals this season following great, consistent performances in front of goal.

Last season, the top scorer award was jointly won by Mamelodi Sundowns star Peter Shalulile and Cape Town City FC poacher Khanyisa Mayo. The two strikers scored 12 goals each.

Mabasa started the season on loan at another Soweto side, Moroka Swallows. With the Dube Birds, he had a fairly good stint, scoring six goals in 13 league matches.

In the January transfer window, he returned to his parent club, the Sea Robbers and continued with his fine form in front of goal. At Pirates, the talented attacker found the back of the net 10 times and provided an assist in 12 league matches.

Riveiro has praised Mabasa for his hard work and contribution to the Soweto giants in the field of play.

The Spaniard hopes the goal poacher can remain consistent and replicate his performances in many seasons to come.

“With Mabasa it means much more than the goals. Like I said several times, he has a really good impact in the group, and contributions in every moment of the game; defending, attacking and in set-pieces,” Riveiro told journalists.

“He was a very important player for us in the second half of the season always available for selection.

“He’s now getting the reward for the hard work he was putting in the other half of the season with [Moroka] Swallows. Overall, it’s a good season for him, hopefully, he can replicate these types of performances for us in the future.”
