Barker’s admission about PSL Goalkeeper & Coach of the Season awards
Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has made honest admission about the PSL Coach and Goalkeeper of the Season awards, revealing what he told Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
PSL announced the nominees last week ahead of the final day of the DStv Premiership.
Barker was pitted against Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena and Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro.
Meanwhile, Stephens is in contention for the goalkeeper award alongside Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns and Badra Sangare of Sekhukhune United.
Barker downplayed their chances in these categories, believing the winners were already clear. He told Stephens they shouldn’t have too many expectations.
He believes Coach of the Season will be awarded to Mokwena for winning the league, and Goalkeeper of the Season will go to Williams for his impressive record of 15 clean sheets in 22 league matches.
BARKER SAYS HE AND STEPHENS DON’T EXPECT MUCH IN THE AWARDS
“Very proud man, to have that many nominations, it’s testimony and recognition for what we’ve done this season,” said Barker.
“These are the only ones that we don’t have to have too many expectations, clean sheets as a goalkeeper [Ronwen Williams].
“I think coach Rulani deserves to be Coach of the Season. He had a remarkable season, to win the league by [23] points and only be beaten on the last day.
“I’m sure he’ll win it and deservedly so.”
STELLIES EARNED MULTIPLE NOMINATIONS
Stellenbosch also boasts nominations for Iqraam Rayners [Footballer of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season, and Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament].
Additionally, Deano Van Rooyen is up for Defender of the Season and Knockout Player of the Tournament, while Devin Titus is nominated for Midfielder of the Season and Knockout Player of the Tournament with Thabo Moloisane also is in the running for Knockout Player of the Tournament.
