Tshegofatso Mabasa opens up on Bafana Bafana snub

Orlando Pirates red-hot striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has finally opened up on the Bafana Bafana’s recent snub.

Coach Hugo Broos named his preliminary squad last week for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Nigeria next month; in June.

Mabasa’s name was not on the list despite his recent performances. In the striking department, Broos opted for Burnley FC star Lyle Foster, Stellenbosch FC talisman Iqraam Rayners and Evidence Makgopa of Orlando Pirates.

Mabasa has been in fine form in front of goal for the Soweto giants. His good displays saw him winning the DStv Premiership Golden Boot award. The 27-year-old managed to finish the campaign with 16 goals and grabbed one assist.

In addition, Mabasa has scored three goals and provided two assists in four outings of the Nedbank Cup. The Sea Robbers take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the final on Saturday, 1 June at Mbombela Stadium.

Mabasa says missing out on playing for the national team whilst he is on his best form is something that doesn’t worry him. All he’s waiting for is his chance.

He gave a good example of Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane. At first, Zwane didn’t receive a national team call-up. But he kept on working hard with his club until he got his chance at Bafana.

“With all honesty, I’m not really [disappointed]. Yes, each and every player wants to play for the national team,” Mabasa told journalists.

“I believe if it’s meant to happen it will happen at some point. You look at Mshishi [Themba Zwane] with him, he wasn’t selected [at first] but now he’s selected in each and every camp.

“For me it’s not something I think about quite a lot. Yes, I’ve been doing well and if it’s meant to happen it will happen, I’m not worried at all.”
