Khune’s gesture hints at Rainer Dinkelacker’s Kaizer Chiefs’ departure
Kaizer Chiefs veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has made a gesture suggesting a possible end to Rainer Dinkelacker’s time at the club.
Dinkelacker returned to Naturena at the start of the season. His history with Amakhosi is rich, having first joined in 1999 alongside Muhsin Ertugral. He played a crucial role in developing goalkeepers like Khune, Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernandez, and Arthur Bartman during his tenure.
His departure after the 2012/2013 PSL season paved the way for his fellow countryman Dennis Rudel. Rudel left last season due to family reasons. This prompted the club to reach out to Dinkelacker, a figure well-respected for his goalkeeping coaching expertise.
His return to serve as a strategic adviser in the goalkeeping department was reportedly on a one-year deal. He worked closely with Tladi Mathibe. As the end of Dinkelacker’s contract looms, there is a growing belief that the gesture signifies his readiness to step aside and allow a new coach to bring in their technical staff.
Chiefs are searching for a new mentor to replace Molefi Ntseki, who was axed early in the season. This would mark the end of Dinkelacker’s second tenure at Amakhosi. His second tenure witnessed the club fail to finish within the top eight. Cavin Johnson, who stepped in on an interim basis, only guided the team to tenth place.
ITUMELENG KHUNE’S GESTURE TO RAINER DINKELACKER
In a poignant moment captured on camera, Chiefs’ legendary goalkeeper, Khune, presented the man who nurtured him into the football icon he is with a signed jersey. The seemingly simple gesture, however, has ignited speculation about Dinkelacker’s future at the club.
The image, widely circulated on social media, shows a smiling Khune handing over the jersey to Dinkelacker. While the exchange could be interpreted as a heartfelt tribute from a player to his mentor, the timing has fuelled rumours of Dinkelacker’s impending departure.
Khune, known for his loyalty and respect for the club’s history, may have paid homage to Dinkelacker’s contribution to his career and legacy. The 36-year-old shot-stopper is also out of contract at the end of next month. Chiefs recently celebrated Khune for 25 years of service at the club.
While the true meaning behind the jersey remains a mystery, insiders at the club hint that it could be a symbolic farewell. As Chiefs embark on a new chapter, a new coach is set to take over next season. In all likelihood, the new mentor will bring his technical team.
