Morgan Mammila: “It’s not Chippa Mpengesi who fired me”
Axed Chippa United technical director Morgan Mammila has revealed that the club’s chairman, Chippa Mpengesi, is not the person who fired him.
Mammila confirmed on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified that he had amicably parted ways with the Eastern Cape side. It’s the fourth time he has cut ties with the club, having been an administrator in the first two instances. His tenure at Chippa United this season began promisingly, with him guiding the team to 18 points in 16 games.
However, a series of unfortunate results, including consecutive losses to Polokwane City and TS Galaxy in December, led to a reassignment to the position of Technical Director in January.
Kwanele Kopo and Thabo September assumed the roles of co-coaches for the remainder of the season. Despite transitioning to Technical Director, Mammila retained a visible presence on the bench, offering guidance to the coaching staff and players.
MORGAN MAMMILA REVEALS HE WASN’T FIRED BY CHIPPA MPENGESI
“I’m the only coach who has started the season and ended it [at Chippa],” Mammila said on SNAWA. “I can confirm that my friend [Mpengesi] and I are no longer working together me and Chippa Mpengesi.
In the 2021/22 season, the Chilli Boys amassed 29 points. The following season, Mammila was a coach for part of the season. “I was the coach there [2022/23]. It was five coaches in that season. 19 points [came from] Morgan Mammila, and the other four coaches share 11 points.
“2023/24. What a season! Morgan started [and collected] 18 points and the other coaches 16 points. All coaches combined, nobody has achieved what I have achieved.”
Pressed about the real reasons for his departure, he said: “There are other reasons; I wish I knew the other reasons. I’m one person who doesn’t ask what the reasons are. We had a chat a week ago. Frankly, and to be honest, it’s not the chairman who fired me. The people who run the team fired me.”
He added that “there are others who form the team’s management” at the club. “It’s not the chairman who fired me. I think he knows who fired. Me and him we chat, but he didn’t deliver the news. The news was delivered through their legal team.”
Mammila said he got along well with Kopo and September, although “we’re different as people”. However, he claims the “decision makers” felt there was no need to have three coaches although he held the Technical Director role. He defended Mpengesi, saying he was “not the sole decision-maker” at the Eastern Cape outfit.
