Lyle Foster back as Broos names Bafana final squad for World Cup qualifiers

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named his final 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe, with Lyle Foster making the cut.

The Belgian mentor had initially announced a 36-member preliminary squad a fortnight ago.

On Thursday, 30 May, he trimmed the squad to 23 players for the World Cup qualifiers. The announcement took place at the SABC television studios in Auckland Park.

The South African senior men’s national team will battle it out with Nigeria away from home in Uyo on Friday, 7 June 2024.

Broos’ charges will then return home to take on neighbours Zimbabwe at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, 11 June 2024

Bafana will be playing at Free State Stadium for the first time in 14 years since the 2010 FIFA World Cup when they got the better of France with a 2-1 scoreline.

As things stand, Broos’ boys are placed second with three points in Group C from two outings.

In the first two games, South Africa registered a 2-1 win over Benin at home and suffered a 2-0 defeat to Rwanda away from home.
